MARHAMCHURCH VILLAGE SHOP
Exciting news!
We are delighted to announce that the Marhamchurch Village Shop Committee has had a recent meeting with the Village Hall trustees, and it has been agreed that a temporary shop can be set up in the former juice bar of the Bray Institute. This will allow your new Village Community shop to begin trading while we continue to raise funds for our permanent new building.
We are waiting now for the trustees to receive formal permission for this arrangement from the Landlord of the Bray, the Truro Diocesan Board of Finance and have also applied to Cornwall Council for the appropriate planning permission.
Meanwhile, your Village Shop Committee has been busy purchasing the necessary items and getting them into safe storage, and making the arrangements for opening in the expectation that these permissions will be granted soon.
We are most grateful for the support of the Bray Trustees, and of course the many locals who are eagerly awaiting the return of the Village Shop!
We will shortly be contacting all those fine folk who put their name down as volunteers at the initial meeting to provide them with additional information. If you know of any new residents or others who may be interested in volunteering a small amount of their time in helping to run the shop, we would be grateful if they could contact us on our shop mobile number – 07923 542242.
We’re almost there at last!————————————————————-
Sponsored walk across DartmoorOur fund raising 56 mile walk across Dartmoor for Marhamchurch Village Shop in June was a wonderful experience. It was the first half of the Two Moors Way, starting at Wembury, thence to Ivybridge, Holne, Widdecombe and finishing at The Drewe Arms in Drewsteignton. It took us two elderly walkers four days and was delightful most of the time. The weather was mainly fine and the scenery was magnificent. On a bleak, grey and windy second day on the Moor we counted no less than 15 skylarks.
Our heartfelt thanks to all our generous sponsors and especially to Nikki Unger at The Bullers for her generous donation, for promoting this event and for organising a delightful surprise reception when we returned from our walk. The princely sum of £1160 was raised for our community shop fund.

Francophiles Celebrate Bastille Day at MarhamchurchBastille Day was celebrated at The Bray, Marhamchurch Village Hall on 14th July to enjoy the Entente Cordiale and to raise funds for Marhamchurch Village Shop. The Bray was packed as all 70 tickets had been sold and the 70 guests, the majorrity dressed in the French fashion, were treated to a splendid three course French meal cooked by eight local volunteers. As they were enjoying the hors d’oeuvres the doors of the hall burst open, a familiar fanfare started and a dance troupe raced in, took the stage and performed a very spirited Can-Can. There were seven dancers, five women and two men. The men wore berets, blouses, full skirts, tutus and walking boots. They were all loudly cheered by an appreciative audience of local residents, the Bude & Holsworthy French Twinning Associations and the Bude Jive Club.
While the guests enjoyed the food and French wine, French Café music and the songs of Edith Piaf and other artists, there was a quiz organised by the Twinning Association, testing French vocabulary and identifying a gallery of French celebrities past and present. A raffle was generously supported and raised £134.
Peter Hillenbrand, Chair of the Marhamchurch Shop Committee, rounded off the evening by thanking the event organisers and all helpers with special thanks to the cooks for freely giving their time and talents. The evening was over all too soon and ended with the audience standing to sing the Marseillaise. It was a delightful event and thanks to the public’s generosity it raised over £700 towards funding Marhamchurch Village Shop (www.marhamchurchshop.co.uk), to be run by the community for the community.
An exciting evening in prospect!
MARHAMCHURCH VILLAGE SHOPCHAIRMAN’S REPORT
20th May 2014
This has been another year of mixed fortunes for the community shop.
There have been some wonderful fund raising events, notably the Hog Roast and Live Music event, Wine & Wisdom, Photographic Marhamchurch Calendar Competition and the Carn to Cove events( Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Resonate Strings Concert at St Marwenne’s Church in April 2013 and Appalachian Roots concert in October ). Many thanks to the Committee members and other volunteers who organised these and other events. We are planning more events and look forward to continued help from the community. For future events visit our website at www.marhamchurchshop.co.uk .
Grant funding has been difficult to get; we are well short of our £140,000(excluding VAT) target. We were given generous funding by the Parish Council, the Revel Committee and a grant from Cornwall County Community Chest. We reapplied to the Big Lottery and this time Stage 1 Planning Application was approved and we submitted a Stage 2 application but were then asked to withdraw it or return the £10,000 Awards for All Grant. We decided to withdraw this application. We also reapplied to the Prince‘s Countryside Fund and reached the last 30 of 290 applications in the UK, but only 15 projects were funded; we shall reapply. Other sources of grant funding are being explored and we shall continue our efforts. Every pound raised by the community improves our chances of securing grants from large organisations.
The Shop Committee is working very hard, visiting other community shops, getting estimates for fitting out and equipping the shop, and organising fund raising events. Publicity for the shop is in very capable hands; Malcolm Mitchell manages our website and has set up links to Facebook, Twitter and PayPal.
Some of the grants must be used before the end of the year, so we have tried several times to find a site for a temporary portacabin from which to run the shop while continuing to raise funds for the permanent building, but have not succeeded. We are grateful to local farmers and to the Methodist Trustees for trying to help us find a location for a temporary shop. We are now exploring the possibility of using the juice bar in The Bray and the Marhamchurch Village Hall Trustees have agreed in principle.

Fantastic news for the village tokick off 2014!News that our local, ‘The Bullers Arms Hotel’, is to re-open on the 19th January has been greeted with absolute delight by residents of Marhamchurch. Work is going on apace to get the pub ready for the opening day and we hope that many village residents and those from further afield will attend on the Sunday lunchtime to give our new landlords the welcome they deserve! With this essential social heart returned to the village things can only get better, and the drive is now on to get our village shop up and running as soon as possible to complete the picture!

Big Lottery HelpsMarhamchurch Village Shop Great news for the Marhamchurch villagers and Shop Committee! Within the last few weeks Big Lottery Awards for All awarded a generous grant of £10,000 to the proposed Marhamchurch Community Shop to help with the purchase of equipment.Cornwall Council approved the outline planning application to build the shop last February and a fund raising drive was launched as the community had to raise at least £20,000 towards the total estimated cost of £140,000 to build, fit out and stock the shop. This would be achieved by share issues in the shop, “Buy a Brick”, donations and fund raising events. There was an encouraging response to a call for volunteers to help run the shop and to raise funds. After a rigorous tendering process Marhamchurch Village Shop Ltd accepted the lowest priced tender submitted by a local builder. With the help of the Plunkett Foundation committee members have visited several community shops, made plans and obtained estimates for fitting out and equipping the shop.
The shop will provide a local food store, newsagents and some postal services for the village and its wider community; it will be run by a manager and volunteers. Marhamchurch Village Shop Limited has been set up as an Independent Provident Society for the benefit of the community and is run by a management committee. Any profit that does not need to be used by the shop for improvements etc., will be returned to the Village for projects agreed by the share holders, who are entitled to attend the AGMs and with one vote per household will be able to influence the manner in which the shop is run and managed. Over £20,000 has been raised from the community and the committee have applied for grants. There is a continuing need for support from Marhamchurch residents and friends to raise more funds to build and run a shop that will serve the community. A great start has been made to the New Year thanks to Big Lottery Awards for All. Marhamchurch villagers and the Community Shop Committee are most grateful for this encouragement.
Marhamchurch Village Shop Limited
The cost of the project to build, fit out and stock the shop is estimated to be £140,000. All costs incurred in the building of the premises and connecting the services will have to be met from sums raised through a share issue, other fund raising and grants. The community will have to raise £22,000 in order to secure grant funding from various sources. Shares costing £10 each are issued by Linda Mason ( 01288 361 072) and over 550 have been sold, but we need more. They must be regarded as a “Social Investment” not a “Financial Investment” in the Village. There is also a “Buy a Brick” scheme; each virtual brick costs £5 and is inscribed with the name of the purchaser or person for whom it is bought. Please contact Valentine Landricombe (01288 361 057) if you wish to “Buy a Brick” and increase the present total of £550. Thanks to Malcolm Mitchell you can now also use Credit & Debit cards as well as PayPal to make payments for virtual bricks, or to make a donation, by visiting the Fundraising Page of this site, there you will find a simple ‘Buy Now’ button.
By these funding initiatives plus generous donations from individuals, from The Revel Committee, and a grant from the Parish Council we have raised £10,000 locally, so we are nearly half way to our target. Applications for grant funding from the Rural Development Fund forEnglandand from the Plunkett Foundation have been submitted and others are being prepared. If you have a fund raising idea to help take us forward to our total, no matter how large or small, please speak with one of the directors or contact the village shop website. The management committee of Marhamchurch Village Shop Ltd would like to thank the Parish Council and the people of Marhamchurch for their continuing support. We are also indebted to the East Cornwall Local Action Group( part of the Local Action for Rural Communities Programme, a European Rural Development Programme for England ( RDPE) and DEFRA Programme), without whom we would not be in a position to move forward. We are grateful for invaluable and continuing support from the Cornwall Rural Community Council (CRCC) and The Plunkett Foundation.

MARHAMCHURCH SHOP SELECTS LOCAL CONTRACTOR
A rigorous tendering process managed by the appointed shop architect, Architecture B, allowed the Marhamchurch Village Shop team to consider a Tender Report at their meeting on 24th April 2012.
The tender process started with advertising for contractors. This resulted in eleven expressions of interest from which four building contractors were issued tendering documentation. Three of the four completed tenders by the noon deadline of 19th March. The team considered the tenders in detail and sought clarification on a number of issues from the Benjamin Richards of Architecture B. The tenders had a range difference of around fifteen percent. There was a unanimous decision to accept the lowest priced tender submitted by Mark Ford Builders.
Peter Hillenbrand, Director of Marhamchurch Village Shop Limited, said. ‘We followed due process for the submissions and would like to thank Benjamin Richards for his persistence in giving us clear options in the process. Without the support and assistance of East Cornwall Local Action Group (part of the Local Action for Rural Communities Programme, a European Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) and DEFRA Programme) we would not be in a position to move forward. The directors and management team will continue to seek ‘value for money’ as we appreciate the voluntary efforts to raise funds for the project.’
Mark Ford commented on the acceptance of the tender. ‘As somebody living in the village I knew it would have to be a very competitive quote. The village is working hard to raise the funds for this much needed voluntary facility. My team is very committed to meeting the high specification and look forward to signing the contract in the near future.’
Management Team meets on 24th AprilThe major item on the agenda will be the announcement of the Building Contractor for the project .
Discussion will also take place on Fund Raising through the sale of shares and virtual bricks. If fund raising is successful it will be possible to make the main application for a grant.
Enjoy Walking in the Countryside around the VillagePat and Roger McDonald, as welcome newcomers, are enthusiastic about exploring the countryside around the village. Their idea is to have organised walks on a regular basis and they have suggested that walkers taking part could make a small donation to the shop.
Many will remember the well attended village walks and especially the infamous inclines walk. They were fun and great social events, finishing off with cream teas at the Bray.
If you are interested, and particularly if you are prepared to help with the organisation, please do contact Pat and Roger, either at the Wednesday Coffee Mornings in the Bray Institute or e-mail [email protected]
MARHAMCHURCH SHOP MOVES TO THE NEXT STAGE
Around 100 villagers and other interested parties attended a meeting on the 27thFebruary at the Bray Institute, Marhamchurch to celebrate the news that planning permission has now been granted to build a new Shop in the village. The community shop will provide locally sourced food and gifts, papers, mini post office, holiday items and much, much more for the village, its wider community and holiday visitors. It will be run for the community and run by the community.
The meeting also launched a Community Share Issue and virtual ‘Bricks’ to raise some of the funds needed. Shares are being issued at £10 each and a good number were sold on the night which was a fantastic start to what is hoped will be an important part of the £20,000 needed to be raised locally. The meeting was told by Project Manager Linda Mason that the ‘shares should be regarded as a social investment and not a financial investment as they carry no right to dividend interest or bonus, but every share bought brings the shop one step closer.’ The monies raised through the community share offer, bricks and fundraising events will be used to part finance the building, fit out and stocking out of the shop, along with all grants obtained. The villagers were informed that ‘The more we raise ourselves the greater the potential grants we may obtain.’
The cost of the project is estimated to be £140,000, of which £22,000 must be raised by the village so thatany funding bodies and DEFRA can see that the project is fully supported by the Marhamchurch community.

Please contact us if you would like to help us fundraise or just would like to make any comments. If you would like to volunteer to work in the shop, have any queries or would just like to make a comment – we would love to hear from you – please email us at [email protected].
